Summary:

  • Wind production hit an all-time high, supplying 56% of Portugal's electricity needs.

  • Total daily wind electricity production reached 112.4 GWh.

  • Storm Martinho fueled a peak of 5080 MW in wind power generation.

  • Renewable sources accounted for 92% of the electricity supply on the same day.

  • Since January, renewable energy has made up 79% of national consumption.

Historic Wind Power Milestone

According to REN, Portugal's energy company, wind power generation soared to unprecedented levels on Wednesday, providing 56% of the nation's total electricity consumption.

Surge in Electricity Production

The stormy conditions from Storm Martinho contributed to a remarkable 112.4 GWh of electricity produced by wind, marking a historic peak. At 12:15 PM, wind power generation reached an impressive 5080 MW, as confirmed by REN.

Renewable Energy Dominance

On the same day, renewable energy sources collectively supplied 92% of the country's electricity needs. Since the beginning of the year, renewable energy has accounted for 79% of Portugal's total consumption, with contributions from hydropower (39%), wind (28%), solar (7%), and biomass (5%).

Sustainable Energy Trajectory

REN emphasized that these achievements underscore Portugal's commitment to integrating renewable energy sources sustainably while ensuring a reliable electricity supply, even in challenging weather conditions. Last month, renewable energy sources provided 78% of the country's electricity consumption.

Solar Energy Growth

In addition to wind power, the increase in solar energy capacity has led to significant growth, with solar energy reaching peak contributions of around 2800 MW for the first time. Despite some unfavorable conditions for wind and photovoltaic power in previous months, the overall trend indicates a robust and growing renewable energy sector in Portugal.
