Portugal's Education Challenges

Recent results from the TIMMS study, which evaluates the performance of students in the 4th and 8th grades in Mathematics and Science, revealed a troubling trend. After years of improvement, the last eight years have shown a decline in learning outcomes. This week, a new OECD report highlighted the literacy and numeracy skills of Portuguese adults aged 15 to 65, placing them near the bottom among 32 countries assessed.

The findings indicate that Portuguese adults are significantly below the OECD average in both reading and writing abilities, as well as in their capacity to use numbers in daily life. This raises urgent questions about why Portugal continues to lag behind its European counterparts.
