PPM's Strong Warning to PSD

The Popular Monarchical Party (PPM) has issued a stern warning to the Social Democratic Party (PSD) regarding the use of the brand 'Aliança Democrática'. In a letter sent to PSD's Secretary-General Hugo Soares, PPM emphasized that this designation is a shared political heritage and can only be used when all three parties—PSD, CDS-PP, and PPM—run together in elections.

"They can call the coalition whatever they want, but they cannot use 'Aliança Democrática' as it is also a political heritage of PPM."

Promise of an Eligible Position

The PPM claims that it was promised an 'eligible position' in the upcoming legislative elections in 2024, and insists that PSD and CDS-PP should refrain from using this designation without their participation. The party led by Gonçalo da Câmara Pereira pointed out that their involvement is crucial for the coalition's integrity.

Historical Significance of the Coalition

The brand 'Aliança Democrática' has been a joint political asset since 1979. The PPM argues that their collaboration has led to victories in every national election they have contested together, making this coalition one of the oldest and most successful in Europe.

"Without our participation, the coalition between PSD and CDS-PP will need to adopt another name, as has been done in the past. This is a matter of political and ethical importance for us."

Legal Actions and Future Implications

The PPM has indicated that if the PSD and CDS-PP proceed without them, they may take legal action to protect their rights to the name 'Aliança Democrática'. They have been legally advised to act preventively, even considering a pre-registration of the AD brand with the Constitutional Court.

A Call for Ethical Compliance

In light of these developments, the PPM has rejected the terms of the coalition agreement proposed to them, asserting that it does not reflect the negotiated terms from 2024. They have sent a counterproposal for an eligible candidate from their party, which was not accepted by the PSD.

"We cannot accept the terms of the coalition agreement as it stands. It does not represent a future for the party."
