Argentine Fugitive Opposes Extradition to Portugal

Rodolfo Lohrman, an Argentine fugitive captured in Spain, has refused extradition to Portugal. His lawyer, Lopes Guerreiro, stated that Lohrman wishes to be extradited to Argentina, his country of origin, instead.

During a recent hearing at the Central Court of Instruction in Madrid, Lohrman expressed his opposition to the extradition requested by Portuguese authorities. The court session was conducted via video conference with the Alicante Court, where Lohrman was detained.

Guerreiro explained that Lohrman had previously expressed his desire to return to Argentina, as he wishes to serve the remainder of his sentence there. Currently, he is in preventive custody in Madrid while awaiting a decision on the extradition request.

In a related case, another fugitive from the Vale de Judeus prison, Mark Roscaleer, was also captured in Spain and is set to appear in the National Court. Portuguese and Spanish police officials expect the European arrest warrant for Roscaleer to be executed soon, despite both fugitives being sought by multiple countries.

Lohrman, a 59-year-old Argentine, along with Roscaleer, was apprehended under a European Arrest Warrant issued by Portugal. This warrant is known for its expedited process compared to other international arrest warrants. The two fugitives were among the last to be recaptured following their escape from the Vale de Judeus prison in September 2024.

The Polícia Judiciária (PJ) of Portugal has been working closely with Spanish authorities to ensure the swift capture of these fugitives, and they anticipate a decision on Lohrman's extradition soon, barring any unforeseen objections.

Other fugitives from the same prison escape have also been recaptured, with varying outcomes regarding their extradition status.
