Severe Weather Conditions in Portugal

A significant portion of mainland Portugal is under orange alert this Saturday due to marine agitation, strong winds, and snowfall, as reported by the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA). An orange alert is issued whenever there is a moderate to high-risk weather situation.

Affected Districts:

  • Porto, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra, and Braga will experience adverse weather conditions until midnight.
  • Faro, Setúbal, and Beja will be impacted until 6:00 PM.

The districts of Guarda and Castelo Branco are specifically under orange alert due to snowfall.

Impact of Strong Winds

The recent gale affecting the country has led to thousands of incidents across Portugal in the last few days, with over 1,200 occurrences reported just on Friday.

The Greater Lisbon area and the Setúbal Peninsula have been the hardest hit regions, with most incidents related to fallen trees and structural damage.

Since Wednesday, the severe weather has caused damage to public spaces, homes, sports facilities, and vehicles. There have also been several injuries reported, including one person in serious condition.
