Severe Weather Warnings Across Portugal

Fifteen districts of continental Portugal are under an orange alert this morning due to strong winds and heavy rain. The Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has indicated that the districts of Braga, Viana do Castelo, and Porto will remain under this warning until 09:00, while Beja and Faro are under alert until 03:00.

The heavy rain alert is also in effect until 03:00 in Faro, Setúbal, Lisbon, Leiria, and Beja. Additionally, a marine agitation alert is active until 09:00 for the districts of Braga, Coimbra, Aveiro, Leiria, Viana do Castelo, and Porto, with warnings in Beja, Lisbon, Setúbal, and Faro lasting until 03:00.

According to the IPMA, the total rainfall accumulation is expected to be between 70 and 100 millimeters in the Central and Southern regions, potentially exceeding this on the Central coast. Snow may fall at higher elevations in the Serra da Estrela, with snow levels dropping to 1,200/1,400 meters by Friday.

The depression Martinho is anticipated to cause an increase in wind intensity, blowing from the south/southeast with gusts reaching 80 to 90 km/h along the coast and up to 110 to 120 km/h in higher areas. Additionally, wave heights of 4 to 5 meters are expected south of Cabo Carvoeiro and 3 to 4 meters north of it.

The IPMA advises keeping track of updates on weather forecasts and warnings due to the uncertainty surrounding the evolution of depression Martinho.

Preventive Measures

The National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) has warned of worsening weather conditions in mainland territory over the coming days, characterized by strong precipitation and wind. Alexandre Penha, the national operational officer of ANEPC, noted that forecasts for the next 48 hours indicate a general worsening of the weather with increased precipitation and wind.

To minimize the impact of adverse weather, the ANEPC recommends the following precautions:

• Ensure that drainage systems are clear of debris and objects that could obstruct water flow.
• Secure loose structures such as scaffolding and signs.
• Exercise caution near wooded areas due to the risk of falling branches and trees.
• Avoid coastal and riverside areas that are historically vulnerable to flooding.
• Refrain from marine activities such as fishing, water sports, and beach walks, and avoid parking vehicles close to the shoreline.
• Drive defensively, reducing speed and being mindful of possible water accumulation on roads.
• Do not cross flooded areas to avoid being swept away.
• Relocate animals, agricultural equipment, and vehicles from flood-prone areas to safety.
• Stay informed about weather updates and follow guidance from Civil Protection and Security Forces.
