Police Arrest 58-Year-Old Suspect in Gruesome Murder Case

The Judicial Police (PJ) have apprehended a 58-year-old man suspected of murdering another man in Santa Maria da Feira and burying the body on his property. This arrest was made late Saturday night and was not conducted in the act of committing a crime.

The statement from the PJ reveals that the suspect faces serious charges, including qualified homicide, desecration of a corpse, and misuse of a payment card.

The victim, a 55-year-old man, had been reported missing on April 15 in the Lourosa parish of Santa Maria da Feira, located in the Porto district. Following suspicion of a crime communicated to the PJ by the public on April 24, immediate investigative actions led to the discovery of the victim's body, which was found buried in the suspect's yard.

Evidence suggests that the two men were acquaintances, and it is believed that the suspect killed the victim, likely by asphyxiation, with the intent to seize the victim's assets. After committing the murder, the suspect buried the body and used the victim’s bank card to mislead the deceased's family by providing false information regarding his disappearance.

The suspect, who has a criminal history related to tax fraud, will be brought before the competent judicial authority for an initial interrogation and the application of appropriate coercive measures.
