New Bedford's Day of Portugal Celebration
The Day of Portugal celebration in New Bedford is set to take place from June 12 to 15, with a brand new location this year at Madeira Field. This popular three-day festival will feature an array of Portuguese music, dance, crafts, and delicious food.
Flag-Raising Ceremony to Kick Off the Celebration
The festivities will commence on June 12 at 6:30 p.m. with a flag-raising ceremony at New Bedford City Hall. Attendees can look forward to a short speaking program and performances of the national anthems of the United States and Portugal by Andrea Vargas. The Discovery Language Academy Folkloric Group will also grace the event with their performance.
A New Venue for a Vibrant Community Celebration
The festival will officially kick off on June 13 at Madeira Field, where the venue will be transformed into an arraial, a traditional Portuguese street celebration. Dulce Matos, president of the New Bedford Day of Portugal Committee, expressed that the move to this new location is aimed at better accommodating the event and enhancing the overall experience for attendees.
"This move marks a new chapter — it’s finally time for us to work together and support each other in a space that represents unity and shared heritage," said Matos.
Festival Schedule and Highlights
- Friday, June 13: Festivities run from 6:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
- Saturday, June 14: Hours are 1 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.
- Sunday, June 15: The festival will conclude with hours from 1 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.
On Friday, live entertainment will feature Michele Pereira at 8 p.m. and Eratóxica, a Boston-based rock band, at 9 p.m. Saturday will showcase performances from the children’s Folkloric Group at 6 p.m., followed by Aristides Romeiro at 7 p.m. and Starlight band at 9 p.m. Sunday will highlight performances by the Azorean Cultural Society Folklore Group at 5 p.m. and the Recordações de Portugal Folkloric Group at 6 p.m., with Intensity band wrapping up the festival at 8 p.m.

Festival-goers can indulge in a variety of Portuguese delicacies, including fresh-grilled sardines and malassadas, with options to dine in or take out. Matos emphasized the goal of creating a welcoming and vibrant atmosphere for all generations, celebrating Portuguese culture while fostering community spirit.
