Access to Serra da Estrela Blocked
Access to the central massif of Serra da Estrela has been cut off since 7:30 PM on Saturday due to heavy snowfall, as reported by the Civil Protection agency to Lusa on Sunday.
"Traffic is not permitted from Sabugueiro in the municipality of Seia and from Piornos in the municipality of Covilhã since 7:30 PM on Saturday. The sections Piornos-Torre-Lagoa Comprida and Sabugueiro-Lagoa Comprida on the National Road (EN) 339, as well as the connection Portela do Arão (Loriga)-Lagoa Comprida, are closed to traffic," stated a source from the Sub-regional Command for Emergency and Civil Protection of Beiras and Serra da Estrela.

The Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued a yellow warning for the districts of Guarda and Castelo Branco due to the snowfall expected to last until Monday. According to the forecasts from IPMA, the total accumulation of snow in the highest points of Serra da Estrela could reach 15 to 20 centimeters.
