Nicole Echeverria, a 31-year-old from New York, moved to Lisbon in 2019 seeking a safer life abroad. After feeling anxious about her safety in the US, particularly after the 2016 elections, she decided to pursue graduate studies in Portugal, believing it would facilitate her move. Echeverria enrolled in a Masters of Science in Business program at Católica Lisbon School of Business & Economics, which she financed from her savings.

In August 2019, she moved to Lisbon, despite never having visited Portugal before. Her initial plan was to return to New York after graduation, but she quickly fell in love with the city’s relaxed vibe and beautiful beaches. With the onset of the pandemic, many classmates returned home, forcing her to consider her options. Ultimately, she prioritized her health and safety, feeling less anxious in Portugal than in New York.

Echeverria now lives in Nazaré with her fiancé, whom she met on TikTok. They are planning their wedding in Portugal for August next year, choosing a historic venue that reflects their love for the country. Echeverria expresses excitement about her future in Portugal, where she can work remotely as a social media manager and enjoy a lower cost of living. She envisions a long-term life in Portugal, dreaming of a summer vacation home in Greece.
