Repatriation Operation Underway
Today, 41 individuals arrived in Lisbon via a C130 aircraft from the Portuguese Air Force, marking a significant repatriation effort from Lebanon. Among them, 16 are Portuguese citizens. This operation was initiated and coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Details of the Repatriation
The group also included eight individuals from Lebanon, five from Spain, eight from São Tomé and Príncipe, and one each from Brazil, Angola, Russia, and France. Paulo Rangel, a government official, emphasized the challenges faced by the passengers during a press briefing, noting that this is the second phase of a larger operation that aims to repatriate a total of 85 people.
Previous Arrivals
Just last Sunday, 28 Portuguese nationals residing in Lebanon and 16 direct family members of other nationalities, including eight children, were brought to Lisbon aboard a KC-390 plane from the Portuguese Air Force.
Ongoing Conflict in Lebanon
The backdrop of this operation is the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Hezbollah militant group, which has escalated over the past year. Following a week of intense Israeli bombings in southern Lebanon, Israeli authorities announced the deployment of troops to dismantle Hezbollah’s infrastructure. On Wednesday, the Israeli military confirmed the deaths of eight soldiers in clashes with Hezbollah.
Humanitarian Impact
The violence has led to nearly 2,000 deaths and over one million displaced individuals, as reported by Lebanese authorities. This situation highlights the urgent need for humanitarian efforts in the region.
