Investment in Education

Six public schools in the Algarve region are set to undergo modernization and rehabilitation, backed by 42 million euros in funding from the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) and the European Investment Bank (EIB). This initiative follows the approval of applications from the municipalities of Monchique, Vila Real de Santo AntĂłnio, Albufeira, Faro, and Lagos.

Key Developments

José Apolinário, president of CCDR Algarve, participated in the public ceremony for the launch of the renovation and expansion of the Integrated Basic School (EBI) of Ferreiras. This event was organized by the Municipality of Albufeira. The EBI of Ferreiras is among the first four schools in the Algarve approved under the School Recovery and Rehabilitation Program, a collaboration between the government and the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities (ANMP). The other schools involved include:

  • EB Manuel do Nascimento (Monchique)
  • EB D. JosĂ© I (Vila Real Santo AntĂłnio)
  • EB Dr. JosĂ© de Jesus Neves JĂşnior (Faro)

The financing contracts for these projects were signed on May 29 in Monchique, with the presence of Manuel Castro Almeida, the Minister for Territorial Cohesion.

Future Plans

Two additional applications from the municipalities of Faro (EB 2+3 D. Afonso III) and Lagos (EB das Naus) are also in progress, with tender processes underway. These PRR calls, part of measure C6, aim to modernize public educational establishments in the 2nd and 3rd cycles of basic education and secondary education, identified as needing priority intervention. All works are expected to be completed by June 30, 2026.
