Jan Christen Leads the Charge in the Algarve Tour
The Swiss cyclist Jan Christen from UAE Emirates, currently leading the overall standings of the 51st Algarve Tour, is set to be the last to start the decisive time trial of the fifth stage today. This pivotal moment will determine who will succeed Remco Evenepoel in the list of winners.
The yellow jersey holder will begin the 19.6-kilometer time trial from Salir to the Alto do Malhão at 16:20, two minutes after third-place Belgian Laurens De Plus (INEOS). The Portuguese cyclist João Almeida, currently in second place, will hit the road four minutes prior to Christen.
Christen holds a four-second advantage over Almeida, who is seen as a strong contender for this unique individual challenge, which includes a climb of 2.6 kilometers to the highest point in Loulé, classified as a second-category climb after a predominantly flat 17 kilometers.
De Plus, sitting in third, is seven seconds behind the yellow jersey, with another Portuguese cyclist, António Morgado from UAE Emirates, in fourth place, trailing by 14 seconds. The competition remains wide open for the title, especially with Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) and Primoz Roglic (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe) still in contention, sitting in sixth and seventh places, respectively.
