Crude Oil Spill in the Tagus River
A crude oil spill in the Tagus River has led to the indefinite closure of several beaches in the Oeiras municipality, including Praia da Torre, Praia de Santo Amaro, and Praia de Paço de Arcos. The Municipal Civil Protection of Oeiras issued a warning, declaring that all beach activities are prohibited to ensure public safety.
Ongoing Contamination
The spill originated during a refueling operation between a Portuguese-flagged ship and a vessel from the Netherlands early Monday morning, downstream of the 25 de Abril Bridge, as confirmed by Commander Ricardo Sá Granja, spokesperson for the Portuguese Navy. The contamination is reportedly growing, affecting not only the beaches but also the Oeiras Marina. The total extent of the contamination is yet to be determined.
Cleanup Efforts Underway
Efforts to contain and clean up the pollution are already underway, involving multiple agencies. The situation has been reported to the Public Prosecutor’s Office and is under investigation by the Maritime Police.
The municipality of Oeiras has stated that both the beach and sea areas are off-limits to the public to guarantee the safety of the population. Updates will be provided through official channels as the situation evolves.
Warning for Water Sports Enthusiasts
Due to the crude oil spill, all activities in the sea and on the beach are currently banned at Praias da Torre, Santo Amaro, and Paço de Arcos until further notice. The contamination poses risks to both health and equipment, with respiratory and skin health hazards reported.
Surftotal advises to completely avoid contact with water in these areas and to follow the guidance of civil protection and maritime authorities. Stay updated with daily reports on the Surftotal website and social media.
