Summary:

  • Traffic resumes in Grilo Tunnel starting Monday, with full restoration by early May.

  • Four lanes of Sacavém/Algés direction open, opposite direction on April 29.

  • Nighttime work will lead to temporary lane closures between 22:00 and 06:00.

  • Renovations include €14 million investment for modernization and safety enhancements.

  • Tunnel sees over 115,000 vehicles daily since its opening in 1998.

Resumption of Normal Traffic in Grilo Tunnel

Starting Monday, normal traffic will resume in the Grilo Tunnel located in the Lisbon district. The Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) announced that all traffic restrictions are set to be lifted by early May.

Details of the Resumption:

  • Traffic will be restored on all four lanes of the Sacavém/Algés direction from Monday, and the opposite direction will follow on April 29.
  • This change will apply during daytime hours (from 06:00 to 22:00), accommodating peak traffic volumes. Work will still continue at night, necessitating the closure of one to two lanes between 22:00 and 06:00 for final paving and signaling installations.

Timeline for Completion

The IP anticipates that all work within the tunnel will be completed by the first week of May, eliminating all restrictions in the Grilo Tunnel and its access points.

Background on the Tunnel Works

In July, IP announced a nine-month traffic disruption due to rehabilitation and modernization works, with an investment of €14 million. The renovations include:

  • Improved drainage systems
  • New pavement installation
  • Upgraded lighting, ventilation, and fire safety systems
  • Installation of hazard detection systems, speed controls (radars), vehicle counting and classification, and video monitoring.

The Grilo Tunnel was inaugurated in 1998 and is part of the IC17/CRIL route, currently handling an average daily traffic of over 115,000 vehicles.
