A Unique Access to Beautiful Beaches
Access to beaches in Portugal is generally free, but some beaches in the Algarve are located on small islands that require boat access, which comes at a cost. The ferry rides to Tavira, Armona, and Culatra islands cost around two euros each way, while a trip to Deserta Island, home to Praia da Barreta, costs at least five euros, making a round trip ten euros.
The Less Visited Desert Island
Deserta Island is one of the least visited islands in the Algarve, characterized by its natural beauty and the absence of buildings, except for the Estaminé restaurant catering to visitors. This island stretches about 11 kilometers, and Praia da Barreta is renowned for having the warmest waters in Portugal.
Rich Biodiversity
The island boasts a rich and well-preserved flora and fauna. The beach is a dynamic ecosystem home to various mollusk species, including clams and whelks.
Birdwatching Haven
The dune cordon preserves the original vegetation, serving as a natural barrier and shelter for delicate species. Among the birds that can be spotted are Borrelhos, Garajaus, Andorinhas do Mar, Gaivinas, and Chiretas, highlighting the ecological significance of this habitat.
Explore the Island on a Wooden Walkway
In addition to its natural beauty, the island features an environmental trail that allows visitors to explore its biological diversity. The path starts from a wooden walkway near Ria Formosa and leads to the beach, offering views of various plant and animal species for an educational and sensory experience.
Naturist Beach Area
A unique aspect of Praia da Barreta is the designated area for naturism, approved by the Faro Municipal Assembly, ensuring a space for this activity in harmony with the surrounding landscape. This tranquil and secluded environment is perfect for relaxation and enjoying nature.
Getting There by Boat
Accessing one of the Algarve's least visited beaches comes with the cost of a boat trip from Cais das Portas do Mar in Faro to Deserta Island, with the ferry ride lasting 45 minutes at a fee of five euros. Alternatively, a faster boat ride takes only 15 minutes for 10 euros.
Reservations for boat trips can be made through the Animaris website or at physical sales points near Faro marina and Cais das Portas do Mar. From June to mid-September, visitors can also reserve a sunshade at Praia da Barreta, with prices for a sunshade and two loungers at 25 euros per day, and 8 euros for a single lounger.
