Tensions Rise in Lisbon
Rui Fonseca e Castro, leader of the far-right party Ergue-te, was arrested by the PSP (Public Security Police) on Friday afternoon at 4 PM in Largo de São Domingos, Lisbon, during an unauthorized gathering of supporters. According to the PSP spokesperson, Sub-Inspector Sérgio Soares, Fonseca e Castro was detained for qualified disobedience related to the protest. He will be taken to a police station to undergo all necessary legal procedures.
Another individual, associated with the movement, was also detained for resistance and coercion after attempting to prevent the ex-judge's arrest.
Neonazi Leader Detained
At around 5 PM, Mário Machado, a known neonazi activist, was captured on live television by SIC during the same gathering. Police sources revealed he is suspected of involvement in a brawl. Machado had previously announced his intention to surrender to serve a sentence of two years and ten months for hate speech and discrimination on social media.
Incident Escalates
The PSP had warned Fonseca e Castro about his criminal actions. Following a moment of tension, he ultimately surrendered, which led to an agitated response from the crowd. Rocks and sticks were thrown at the police, who had to shield themselves with protective gear.
Video footage captured by SIC Notícias shows the former magistrate approaching an officer and signaling his surrender before being taken away, inciting anger among his supporters who shouted “Shame, shame!”
More than a hundred supporters from various far-right groups, including Habeas Corpus and 1143, chanted: “Arrest one, arrest all!”
Police Intervention
The PSP had previously denied permission for a concentration event planned by Ergue-te and Habeas Corpus at Martim Moniz, citing concerns over public order due to conflicting ideologies. The Lisbon City Council, led by Carlos Moedas, affirmed that they would adhere to the PSP's recommendations, emphasizing that the conditions for safety were not met and that the gatherings posed a risk to public tranquility.
