Tribute to Celeste Caeiro
On the 51st anniversary of the April 25 Revolution, Celeste Caeiro, the woman who transformed the carnation into a symbol of freedom, was honored with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque at the junction of Rua do Carmo and Rossio in Lisbon.
"At the location where 51 years ago Celeste Caeiro offered a carnation to a young soldier asking for a cigarette, the 'Celeste of the Carnations' will now be remembered by the people of Lisbon. The plaque, featuring the poem Celeste em Flor by Rosa Guerreiro Dias, was unveiled today near Rua do Carmo," stated a post by the Lisbon City Council on social media.
Celeste Caeiro, who passed away on November 15 last year, had previously received honors from the Lisbon City Council in February of this year, being posthumously awarded the City Honor Medal. A month later, she was also recognized by the President of the Republic with the title of Officer of the Order of Liberty.
