Important Update on Portuguese Passports

The passport is a vital document for international travel, serving as proof of identity and nationality. In Portugal, the validity of the Portuguese Electronic Passport (PEP) has been extended from five to ten years. This change, announced by the Government, will be implemented in 2026.

New validity period for passports

According to a statement from the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, this extension aims to align with international practices and provide more convenience for citizens, reducing the necessity for frequent renewals.

New Design and Features

In addition to the extended validity, the PEP will feature a new graphic design themed around the “National Territory,” showcasing Portugal's geographical and cultural elements. The design will be selected through a public competition.

The updated PEP will comply with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, ensuring data security and authenticity. Key features include:

  • Use of highly durable materials
  • Anti-copy protection and digital security techniques
  • Advanced security printing to prevent counterfeiting
  • Customization according to the latest international requirements

The Portuguese Electronic Passport is globally recognized, allowing entry into many countries without needing a visa. The decision to extend validity follows a trend seen in several European countries, aiming to enhance convenience for citizens and alleviate pressure on administrative services.

The Government anticipates that the new passport version will be available in the first half of 2026, remaining essential for the identification and international mobility of Portuguese citizens.
