Celebrate Freedom and Culture in Lisbon this April
Starting from April 1st, Lisbon will not only commemorate the Revolution but also honor one of its most notable composers, Carlos Paredes. The Festas de Abril program will feature a rich array of events including music, theater, cinema, dance, poetry, and visual arts, with most initiatives being free entry.
A Tribute to Carlos Paredes
In celebration of Carlos Paredes' centenary, a special concert titled Variações sobre Paredes will take place on April 27th at Praça do Município. The artistic direction will be led by António Miguel Guimarães, with performances featuring renowned musicians such as Pedro Jóia (classical guitar), Joana Bagulho (harpsichord), and others, complemented by live painting and drawing by António Jorge Gonçalves.
Events Kicking Off April
The festivities will commence on April 1st at Museu do Aljube with a performance by the musical project Anónimos de Abril, featuring Rogério Charraz and José Fialho Gouveia. Visitors can also explore exhibitions including "Architects of Freedom" until April 30th and "Before Independence, There Was a Fight for Liberation" throughout the year. Additionally, join the guided tour "The Revolution is in the Street!" on April 12th and May 10th, revisiting key locations from the April 25th Revolution.
Musical Highlights
On April 23rd, Hélder Moutinho will pay tribute to poet and composer João Monge at CCB. The dance performance Cooperativa by Associação Parasita will be showcased at Teatro do Bairro Alto from April 24th to 27th, exploring the importance of economic and social structures. The Museu do Fado will host the play 50 Madrugadas, delving into the works of Ary dos Santos from April 24th to May 3rd.
Cinema and Political Discourse
At Cinema São Jorge, the Política Festival will celebrate the 50th anniversary of PREC from April 24th to 26th, featuring films, performances, and discussions. On April 27th, the Museu do Aljube will screen the documentary Women and Resistance, while earlier, on April 15th, Those Who Stayed (Everywhere, Everyone Has) will highlight testimonies from political opponents of the Estado Novo.
