Lisbon Assembly's New Initiative on Noise Pollution

The Lisbon Municipal Assembly has taken a significant step by recommending the city council to conduct a specific assessment of noise pollution levels in areas most affected by road traffic noise. This decision, made on Tuesday, comes from a proposal by the Livre party, emphasizing the need for a healthier urban environment.

Key Highlights of the Proposal

The assembly stated:
"For the right to quality of life and well-being in Lisbon", pointing out that road traffic is the leading cause of noise pollution in the municipality. The proposal received support from all parties except Chega, who abstained from voting.

The recommendation calls for:

  • A thorough evaluation of noise pollution in Lisbon's residential and recreational areas.
  • An analysis of mitigation strategies to reduce the impact of traffic noise, especially in parks, gardens, and waterfront areas.

Future Actions and Recommendations

Although the proposal is non-binding and relies on the council's decision, Livre aims to ensure that the municipal executive informs environmental organizations in Lisbon about the assessment and potential noise mitigation measures.

In a related session, the assembly also approved a Chega proposal for schools to provide vouchers for educational materials, ensuring families do not have to pay upfront.

Transparency in Municipal Proposals

Additionally, a recommendation from the Iniciativa Liberal (IL) called for the municipal executive, under Carlos Moedas (PSD), to publish all proposals discussed in council meetings online, while respecting legal constraints regarding data protection.

Recreational Spaces for Youth

The assembly also backed a proposal from the MPT for the creation of free recreational facilities for teenagers throughout the city to promote physical activity and socialization.

Honoring Cultural Figures

The assembly suggested that the council honor actors Morais e Castro and Henrique Viana with toponymic tributes.

Broader Context of Current Events

In light of recent global events, various votes related to the Middle East conflict were also addressed, reflecting diverse perspectives among local political parties.
