Mild Earthquake Reported in Évora
A 3.1 magnitude earthquake struck at 03:44 this Wednesday in the Évora region, according to the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).
The earthquake's epicenter was located near Évora, registering a maximum intensity of IV on the Mercalli scale. This seismic activity was detected by the stations of the Continental Seismic Network of Portugal.
The IPMA has confirmed that the tremor caused no personal injuries or material damage as of their latest report at 04:40.
A magnitude of 3.1 on the Richter scale is categorized as small. However, an intensity level of IV is considered moderate, which can cause noticeable effects such as:
- Suspended objects swaying
- Vibrations similar to those caused by heavy vehicles
- The sensation of a heavy ball hitting walls
- Parked cars shaking, and windows, doors, and crockery trembling
- Glass and crockery may clink or rattle
According to the IPMA, at the upper end of this intensity level, walls and wooden structures may creak.
