Urgent Call for Elections
Pedro Nuno Santos, the Secretary-General of the Socialist Party (PS), emphasized the need for swift elections in Portugal following a meeting with President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa at the Palácio de Belém. He stated, "Elections must happen as soon as possible," echoing sentiments previously expressed by the current Prime Minister, who suggested that May 11 could be a feasible date for the elections.
During his remarks, Santos criticized the actions of Luís Montenegro's government over the past year, framing his comments in a pre-election context. He expressed the need for a new phase in Portuguese politics and affirmed that the PS is ready to campaign for victory.
When asked about the ongoing preventive investigation by the Public Prosecutor's Office (PGR) into Montenegro's family business, Santos refrained from commenting directly, instead urging for caution and prudence. He reiterated his appeal for PSD to allow the PS to govern if electoral results permit.
Earlier, President Marcelo also met with Leonor Beleza and Luís Montenegro, who stated that the solution to the current political impasse lies in prompt legislative elections. The President is meeting with all parliamentary parties in light of the recent resignation of the PSD/CDS-PP government following the rejection of a confidence motion.
