President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa Convenes State Council

In light of recent political developments, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has summoned the State Council for January 17. This decision follows consultations with the political parties represented in the Madeira Regional Legislative Assembly regarding a motion of censure against the regional government.

The Portuguese Constitution allows the president to dissolve the legislative assemblies of autonomous regions after consulting the State Council and the represented parties. According to the official statement published by the Presidency, the State Council's role includes providing opinions on the dissolution of both the Assembly of the Republic and the Legislative Assemblies of the autonomous regions.

On Tuesday, President Rebelo de Sousa heard from the following parties in descending order of representation: PSD, PS, JPP, Chega, CDS-PP, IL, and PAN. This move indicates that the Madeira archipelago may face new elections following the approval of a censure motion on December 9, supported by PS, Chega, JPP, Iniciativa Liberal, and PAN.

This will mark the second election in Madeira within less than a year, with the last vote taking place on May 26, 2024.
