Atmospheric conditions are contributing to the persistence of this weather pattern.
Portugal's mainland and the Madeira archipelago are set to experience a new weather disturbance on Wednesday, bringing heavy rain, hail, and strong winds. According to meteorologist Pedro Sousa, Tuesday will see a slight improvement in weather conditions, with only minor showers expected. However, a new depression is moving in from the Atlantic, which will worsen the weather and could last several days.
In Madeira, similar conditions are anticipated, prompting the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) to issue an orange warning for strong winds from 12 PM on March 19 to 3 AM on March 20. An orange warning for strong maritime agitation has also been issued for the North Coast of Madeira and Porto Santo during the night of Wednesday into Thursday.
While Tuesday will bring some improvement in Madeira's weather, it will also be affected by the upcoming depression bringing intense wind and rain. Sousa noted that it is unusual to have so many depressions occurring frequently in March but also not entirely abnormal, as such patterns can happen from time to time in various seasons. The persistence of these depressions is attributed to the atmospheric positioning of high-pressure systems, allowing for the unusual southward movement of Atlantic depressions.
Stay tuned for updates as this weather system develops!
