Summary:

  • Funchal Port Authority issues warning for strong maritime agitation and high winds.

  • Winds expected to reach 63-74 km/h and shift to NW in the morning.

  • Wave heights on the north coast could reach up to 6 meters.

  • Safety precautions include reinforcing mooring and avoiding coastal areas.

  • Recreational fishing is discouraged due to dangerous conditions.

Maritime Advisory from Funchal Port Authority

The Funchal Port Authority has issued an updated warning regarding strong maritime agitation and very strong winds.

Wind Forecast:

  • Until 6 PM tomorrow, winds will be from the W/SW, ranging from 40-60 km/h, occasionally reaching 63-74 km/h.
  • These winds are expected to shift to NW in the morning and will decrease to 20-39 km/h by the end of the period. Visibility will be generally good to moderate, but may occasionally drop to weak levels.

Wave Conditions:

  • On the north coast, waves are predicted to reach 4 to 5 meters, temporarily increasing to 4.5 to 6 meters from the early morning.
  • The south coast will see waves of 2 to 3 meters, gradually increasing to 3.5 to 4.5 meters on the western part of Madeira Island.

Safety Recommendations

In light of these conditions, the Funchal Port Authority advises caution for those planning to go to sea or who are already on the water or near coastal areas:

  • Reinforce mooring and maintain close surveillance of docked and anchored vessels.
  • Avoid walks near the sea or in areas exposed to maritime agitation, such as port breakwaters, cliffs, or beaches, to prevent being caught off guard by waves.
  • Do not engage in recreational fishing, especially near cliffs and areas frequently impacted by wave action, as the sea can easily reach seemingly safe zones under these conditions.
