Strong Maritime Disturbance Alert from Funchal Port Authority
The Port Authority of Funchal has issued a warning regarding strong maritime disturbances, based on information from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA). This alert is valid until 6:00 AM on Tuesday, April 8, for the Madeira archipelago.
Weather Conditions
According to the official statement, winds will be coming from the southern quadrant, blowing at moderate to fresh speeds (between 20 and 39 km/h), with the potential to reach very fresh intensities of up to 50 km/h. Visibility at sea is expected to range from good to moderate.
Wave Forecast
The wave conditions are predicted to gradually worsen, with the north coast experiencing waves from the west/northwest measuring between 1.5 to 2.5 meters, increasing to 3 to 4 meters by the end of the period. The south coast will see swell from the southwest, with heights ranging from 1 to 2 meters, rising to 2 to 3 meters in the western part by late afternoon.
Safety Recommendations
In light of these conditions, the Port Authority recommends that the maritime community and the general public take precautionary measures, such as reinforcing moorings and closely monitoring docked or anchored vessels. They also advise against walks near the sea or in exposed areas like jetties, cliffs, or beaches, and recommend abstaining from recreational fishing in dangerous locations due to wave breakage.
