BEJA - The upcoming startup carrier, Global Airlines, made headlines as its inaugural Airbus A380 landed in Beja, Portugal, on January 16, 2025. This significant event follows extensive maintenance operations carried out in Dresden, Germany. The arrival of this superjumbo is a pivotal step in the UK startup's ambitious plans for the aviation market.

The aircraft, previously operated by China Southern Airlines, underwent comprehensive servicing at EFW’s facility since October 2023. Notably, it features a partial livery showcasing Global Airlines’ branding while retaining elements of its former operator’s design.
Strategic Importance of Beja
The Portuguese facility in Beja serves as Hi Fly’s primary flight testing center, which plays a crucial role in the operational development of the A380 for Global Airlines. This landing marks only the second time an A380 has landed on Portuguese soil, the first being in 2018 with Hi Fly’s own aircraft.
Aviation enthusiasts gathered in large numbers at Beja Airport to witness this historic event, which commenced from Prestwick, Scotland, where initial maintenance was performed.

Hi Fly’s Role and Future Plans
Hi Fly successfully transported Global Airlines’ Airbus A380-841, registered as 9H-GLOBL, completing a 2,237 KM (1,390 nautical mile) journey. The flight, piloted by Commander Carlos Mirpuri, took three hours, contributing to his extensive experience with the A380.
Commander Mirpuri praised the A380’s advanced technology and maneuverability, noting its responsiveness akin to smaller Airbus models. He expressed excitement for the aircraft’s upcoming commercial operations with Global Airlines.
This delivery flight culminates a two-year collaboration between Hi Fly and Global Airlines, with Hi Fly among only 15 airlines globally to have operated the A380. Global Airlines’ CEO, James Asquith, confirmed this flight as part of the company’s expansion strategy, with plans for expanded operations throughout 2025.
