Severe Weather Conditions Across Portugal
All districts of mainland Portugal are under a yellow warning starting this Friday due to the effects of Storm Jana. This storm is expected to bring strong winds, heavy rain, maritime agitation, and even snow.
According to the Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), the storm will remain nearly stationary northwest of the Iberian Peninsula until Monday, linked to a cold front and another system transporting cold air over the Madeira archipelago.
Rain and Snow Forecast
The IPMA forecasts periods of rain, which may be heavy at times as the cold front passes, transitioning to showers that will persist until Sunday. Notably, snow is expected at altitudes above 1,500 meters on Saturday.
Wind and Maritime Warnings
Strong winds with gusts of up to 80 km/h are anticipated, potentially reaching 110 km/h in higher areas, alongside significant maritime agitation. The IPMA has issued a yellow warning for all mainland districts between 12:00 and 15:00 on Friday and again from 03:00 to 09:00 on Saturday.
Specific districts including Porto, Viseu, Guarda, and others are also under a yellow wind warning for Friday and Saturday. Additionally, a orange warning has been issued for districts like Faro, Porto, and others for Sunday and Monday due to expected high waves.
Madeira Island Impact
The Madeira archipelago will also be affected, with an orange warning for the North Coast from Saturday to Monday due to strong maritime agitation, expecting waves of 5 to 6 meters high, with maximum heights possibly reaching 11 meters. The region is also under a yellow warning due to strong winds and rain starting Friday.
Public Safety Alerts
In light of the worsening weather conditions, the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) has alerted the public about the potential for flooding and accidents.
