Storm Hermínia Causes Widespread Weather Warnings Across Portugal
All districts in mainland Portugal are under weather warnings on Monday and Tuesday due to heavy rain and strong winds. Eight districts, including Porto, Setúbal, Viana do Castelo, Lisbon, Leiria, Aveiro, Coimbra, and Braga, are under red alerts due to the expected high waves as a result of the Hermínia depression, according to the IPMA.
The red alert will be in effect from 12:00 PM on Monday until 9:00 AM on Tuesday, anticipating waves from the northwest reaching heights of 7 to 8 meters, with potential peaks of 14 meters.
These districts will initially remain under orange alerts until 12:00 PM on Monday, transitioning to red until 9:00 AM on Tuesday, and then reverting to orange from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM on Tuesday.
Due to the wave conditions, Faro and Beja will be under orange alerts until 9:00 PM on Tuesday, before shifting to yellow alerts until 6:00 PM on Wednesday.
The IPMA has also issued yellow alerts for Santarém, Lisbon, and Portalegre until 9:00 AM due to rain, which may be heavy at times, possibly accompanied by thunderstorms. Additionally, Évora and Beja are under yellow alerts until 12:00 PM on Monday, while Faro and Setúbal will remain under alert until 3:00 PM.
Strong winds have prompted yellow alerts for Santarém, Lisbon, and Portalegre until 6:00 PM on Monday, with various other districts also facing similar warnings through the day.
The northern coast of Madeira Island and Porto Santo are under yellow alerts due to maritime agitation until 6:00 PM on Tuesday. Furthermore, the central group of the Azores (Graciosa, Terceira, Faial, Pico, and São Jorge) has yellow alerts until 12:00 PM on Monday.
The red alert signifies an extreme weather situation, while the orange alert indicates moderate to high risk, and the yellow alert signifies risk for specific weather-dependent activities.
