Storm Bert Causes Warnings in Minho

The effects of Storm Bert are already being felt with moderate to strong winds this Sunday morning. The Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has issued an orange warning for the districts of Braga and Viana do Castelo due to expected wind gusts between 18:00 and 01:00 on Monday, alongside heavy rainfall from 20:00 to 01:00.

Intense Rainfall Expected

According to the weather forecasts, the entire Minho region will experience a period of intense rain, starting first in the northern coastal areas, including Caminha, Viana do Castelo, Monção, Arcos de Valdevez, and Paredes de Coura, between 20:00 and 21:00. The rain will then gradually move southward into the district of Braga, affecting all municipalities equally.

The most critical period is predicted to be between 22:00 and midnight, with heavy rainfall expected to impact Esposende, Barcelos, Braga, Vila Verde, Amares, Ponte de Lima, Ponte da Barca, and Arcos de Valdevez the most.

Wind Conditions

The IPMA also notes that from mid-afternoon onward, periods of rain will spread across the Minho and Douro Litoral regions, intensifying later in the day, possibly accompanied by thunderstorms. Winds will be moderate to strong, with gusts reaching 75-95 km/h, particularly in Minho and Douro Litoral, and very strong in higher altitudes, with gusts of 100-110 km/h, especially from late afternoon onward.
