Serious Train Accident in Alentejo
A 12-year-old boy was seriously injured today after being struck by a train on the Linha do Sul in the municipality of Odemira. The incident occurred around 5:29 PM, prompting immediate medical attention.
According to the Civil Protection agency, the child was stabilized at the scene before being airlifted to Santa Maria Hospital in Lisbon by the National Institute of Medical Emergency helicopter at 7:44 PM.
The train traffic on this section of the Linha do Sul, near Luzianes-Gare, was resumed at 7:15 PM after being halted due to the accident. A spokesperson for Infraestruturas de Portugal confirmed that train services between Santa Clara-Sabóia and Luzianes resumed around 7:00 PM.
The boy was reportedly with his father near a bridge on the railway, approximately one kilometer beyond a level crossing when the accident occurred. Initial reports indicated that train services had been interrupted since 5:10 PM due to the incident, which was first reported as an unspecified incident at kilometer 246.
Emergency services responded with 12 personnel supported by four vehicles, including those from the firefighters, GNR, and INEM, as well as the helicopter based in the Algarve.
