Sardine Fishing Resumes
The sardine fishing season is set to reopen this Monday, with a total quota of 34,406 tons established for 2025, as per an official decree published in the Diário da República. The announcement was made by the Secretary of State for Fisheries, Cláudia Monteiro de Aguiar.
Quota Details
Starting at 00:00 on April 21, 2025, the Portuguese fleet will be allowed to catch sardines, specifically the species sardina pilchardus. The quotas for different types of vessels are as follows:
- Vessels up to 9 meters: Maximum of 1,800 kg (80 baskets).
- Vessels between 9 and 16 meters: Maximum of 3,150 kg (140 baskets).
- Vessels over 16 meters: Maximum of 4,500 kg (200 baskets).
Further Restrictions
From May 5, 2025, the quotas will be adjusted:
- Vessels up to 9 meters: 2,250 kg (100 baskets).
- Vessels between 9 and 16 meters: 3,938 kg (175 baskets).
- Vessels over 16 meters: 5,625 kg (250 baskets).
Additionally, starting June 2, 2025, the limits will be:
- Vessels up to 9 meters: 2,700 kg (120 baskets).
- Vessels between 9 and 16 meters: 4,725 kg (210 baskets).
- Vessels over 16 meters: 6,750 kg (300 baskets).
Important Regulations
On national holidays, fishing, maintaining onboard, unloading, and selling sardines is strictly prohibited. Furthermore, it is illegal to transfer sardines to a different auction house than the one corresponding to the unloading port, and a single vessel cannot unload at more than one port in a single day.
The sardine fishing season had previously closed on December 4.
