Teachers' Union Welcomes New Law
The SPLIU (National Union of Licensed Teachers) has expressed its approval of the new law that categorizes assaults on teachers as a public crime. However, they are advocating for a revision of the student statute, which includes increased penalties for repeated indiscipline and bullying against teachers.
In a statement, the SPLIU emphasized that it is the responsibility of the next Minister of Education to enhance the legal framework by revising the student statute. This revision should focus on strengthening corrective measures and increasing sanctions against students who are consistently disruptive and engage in bullying behaviors towards teachers.
New Legal Framework
The law, which came into effect last Friday, escalates the penalties for assaults on teachers. While the SPLIU commends this initiative, they believe that the new legal framework alone will not sufficiently reduce or alleviate the harmful effects of indiscipline and systematic bullying that teachers face in schools and beyond, often occurring just before assaults.
Need for Awareness Campaigns
The union also stressed the importance of conducting awareness and information campaigns aimed at parents and guardians. These campaigns should focus on shifting attitudes and behaviors towards teachers.
Legal Protections for Educators
According to the new law, teachers, doctors, prison guards, and officials from the Tax and Customs Authority will be exempt from court costs when facing offenses related to their professional duties, similar to existing protections for police and security forces.
