Two Climbers Tragically Die in Picos de Europa
Two climbers lost their lives on Monday in the Picos de Europa region, specifically in an area known as “Espolón de los Franceses”, located in the municipality of Camaleño, Cantabria. According to RTVE, both victims are Portuguese nationals, a detail that SIC Notícias is currently working to confirm with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Emergency services in Cantabria reported that a helicopter was dispatched to the scene after another climber, who witnessed the accident, raised the alarm. The incident occurred late in the morning on a route designated for experienced climbers.
While the emergency services have not officially confirmed the nationality of the deceased climbers, sources from the Cantabrian regional government have indicated to various local and national media outlets that the victims are indeed Portuguese.
The “Espolón de los Franceses” route features a height of approximately 1,000 meters, with 650 meters dedicated to climbing, while the remaining part consists of a channel leading to a ridge that ascends to the summit. The last recorded accident in this area took place on January 2, when a 44-year-old climber fell to their death at the summit of Peña Vieja.
